Mr. Johnny William Cantrell Johnny William Cantrell, age 50, of Scottsboro, Alabama, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2025. He was born on October 1, 1974, in Canton, Mississippi, to William (Billy) Robert Cantrell and Donnie Cantrell. He was preceded in death by his father and his beloved grandparents, B.H. and Ruth Roberts, and Elmus and Vera Cantrell.

Johnny is survived by his three children, Madelyn, Aidan, and Keegan, and the mother of his children, Colleen Gilligan. He is also mourned by his loving mother, Donnie Cantrell; his sisters, Doraine Cantrell, and Loretta (Lee) Perry; his mother-in-law, Kathleen Scott; and his brother-in-law, Scott (Mary Ann) Gilligan. Johnny cherished his nieces and nephews, Sheena (Kelly) Webber, William (Tori) Perry, Jacob Perry, Caitlin (Travis) Barron, Reilly Gilligan, and Della Gilligan, as well as his great-nieces and nephews who brought him much joy.

Johnny’s love for the University of Alabama was a central part of his life, and he was proud to earn his degree in Criminal Justice there in 1997. His professional journey began with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy, and he later served as an investigator with the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force. In 2000, Johnny began his distinguished career with the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center, ultimately rising to the role of Senior Special Agent with the State Bureau of Investigations Major Crimes Division. He retired in October of 2022 after 29 years of service, during which time he dedicated himself fully to protecting and serving the citizens of Alabama.

Johnny’s greatest pride was his children, whom he loved deeply and supported wholeheartedly. He treasured watching them grow and succeed. He was also passionate about coaching and cheering them on in their sports endeavors. Johnny’s hobbies included sports shooting, spending time on the lake, traveling the country, and spending time with family and friends.

As a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Scottsboro, Johnny was an active participant in the community. He served on the Vestry and volunteered with the Sunday School. Johnny’s strong faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he was known for his ability to love others well.

Johnny’s legacy lives on through his children, his family, and the countless lives he touched throughout his career and personal life. His commitment to faith, family, and public service will be remembered by all who knew him.

A celebration of Johnny’s life will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 6, 2025 at the church from 6:00 pm until 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the church or the National Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial fund in Johnny’s memory.
