John William Sherer, age 82, of Arab, Alabama passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at his residence. John was born in Wales Township, St. Clair County, Michigan on October 26, 1942, the beloved son of Richard William Sherer, Sr. and Margaret Helen Fredrick Sherer. He and Lila Ruth Clark Sherer have shared over 60 years and built a life marked by dedication, hard work, and love.
John started off his work career at the local gas station in Lake Odessa Michigan in the early 60s. He went on to own a successful gravel business there for many years before going to work for Hough Brothers in Sunfield Michigan, where he was a job supervisor that built feed mills in Maine North Carolina, Pennsylvania and finally in Albertville, Alabama where he lived for many years. He started a construction company in Albertville and Guntersville that he ran for many years before retiring after that he mainly did consulting work for construction till 2018. He thoroughly enjoyed the process involved in creating and completing projects.
Family members John leaves behind to cherish memories include his wife, Lila Ruth Clark Sherer; son, Christopher Sherer; brother, Richard William “Dick” (Barb) Sherer, Jr.; sisters, Betty Denhof, Mary Klein (Carl), and Faith Umlor; sister in law Joan Sherer and brother in law Joel Klein and 14 nieces and nephews; 40 great nieces and nephews; and 7 great great nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his son, Phillip Jeffery Sherer; mother, Margaret Helen Fredrick Sherer; father, Richard William Sherer, Sr; brother, Robert Sherer; and sister, Rita Klien and brother in laws Bob Ulmor and Bernard Denhof and Survivor brother in law Joe Klein.
Graveside Services for John will be at 2:00pm on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 at Crestview Cemetery in Guntersville, Alabama. Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel is entrusted with arrangements.
