John Thomas McGee, 73, of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away on December 11, 2015, following a five-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
McGee was born and raised in Florence, Alabama, where he met his wife of 51 years, Norma Lancaster McGee. He attended Mars Hill Bible School and graduated from Coffee High School in 1960. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland and an MSA degree in Managerial Accounting from George Washington University.
McGee spent nearly 40 years working for the federal government, holding numerous financial management positions in more than a dozen locations here in the United States and around the world. He was stationed in Washington D.C.; Houston, Texas; Kingsville, Texas; Pensacola, Florida; Panama City, Florida; New Orleans, Louisiana; Brooklyn, New York; Memphis, Tennessee and internationally in the island nations of Bermuda, Bahrain and Diego Garcia.
McGee was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, who always had a smile on his face and turned strangers into friends virtually everywhere he went. A lifelong member of the Church of Christ, he was devout in his Christian faith and selfless in his service to God, his family and to those in need. John was also a lifelong sports fan who followed every move of the Dallas Cowboys, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Montgomery Biscuits. He changed the world for the better, and he will truly be missed.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Lancaster McGee; daughter, Deborah McGee Carson and her husband Chris; son, Joel McGee and his wife Emily; granddaughter, Chase Alexandra Carson; brother, William Owen McGee; sisters, Elizabeth Ann McGee and Cecilia Ruth Carroll; sister-in-law, Deborah Gano Lancaster; nephews, Keith McGee and D.J. Lancaster; niece, Danielle Lancaster Stewart and her husband Chad; along with a host of friends and church family members around the world.
Mr. McGee was preceded in death by his parents Buford Thomas McGee and Clara Mae Stutts McGee; father-in-law and mother-in-law Melvin and Louise Lancaster; brothers-in law David Lancaster and Wallace “Kat” Carroll; and sister-in-law Betty McGee.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 15, from 6 – 8 p.m., at Greenview Funeral Home in Florence, Alabama. The funeral service, officiated by Milton Sewell, will take place on Wednesday, December 16, at 2 p.m., in Greenview’s Memorial Chapel.
