MSGT John Robert Kent, Ret. passed away, at the age of 79, at his residence in Montgomery, Alabama on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. John was born in Jersey City, New Jersey on May 21, 1945. He was the son of Charles Robert Kent and Mary Iowa Harrison Kent. John spent his early years in North Carolina. He chose, as a young man, to meet his military commitment and joined the US Air Force. With 23 years of active, honorable and faithful service he succeeded in reaching the rank of Master Sergeant. His last assigned duty was in Montgomery, AL at Maxwell/Gunter Air Force Base. He retired in 1989 and chose to make Montgomery his home. He and wife, Jacqueline W. Whisenant Kent (formerly of the Union Hill community of Morgan County) have been married for over 53 years.
John was a wonderful family man. He took great pride in his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. John was a huge baseball fan and followed the Atlanta Braves faithfully. Hank Aaron was his all-time favorite player. In addition to family and baseball, John enjoyed the Military and History Channels and Classic cars. John’s military service and his commitment to his country was very important to him and of which he was extremely proud.
Family members left behind to cherish their memories include: his beloved wife, Jacqueline Kent; son and daughter in law, Chris and Melissa Kent; daughter and son in law, Jennifer and Kendall Henderson; grandchildren, Alex Kent (Raven), Collier Kent and Camden Kent; great grandchildren, Braxton Kent, Courtney Kent and one on the way Bryson Kent; brothers, Charles Wayne Kent (Judy)and Michael Harrison Kent (Patrica). Brother-in-law Randy Whisenant, and sister-in-law Mary Gandy (Allen). He left behind a host of nephews, nieces and extended family. He was also a father and mentor to many others.
Services for John are planned for Sunday, June 9, 2024, at Brindlee Mountain Chapel (3552 US Hwy 231, Lacey’s Spring, AL.) The family will receive extended family, friends and guests for a visitation between the hours of 12:00 noon and 2:00 pm. The funeral service will immediately begin at 2:00. Burial will be in the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery (15030 US Hwy 231, Union Grove, AL). Pallbearers will be Dusty Phillips, Alex Kent, Zachary Whisenant, Kelvin Duncan, Ashley Rivers, Greg Chanell, and alternate Allen Gandy.
