John Richard Boyd, 87, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, at his residence. Mr. Boyd was born July 29, 1930, in Giles County, Tennessee, to Bernard and Lela Childers Boyd. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving aboard three different destroyers once under enemy fire with casualties during the Korean War. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and was retired from Monsanto after 35 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Lt. John Boyd Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Peek Boyd; son, Kenneth D. Boyd; four grandchildren, Tajanna Draher, of San Antonio, Texas, Sarah Brady (Charles), of Richland, South Carolina, John Tyler Boyd (Audrey), of Madison, Alabama, and Jaden Boyd, of Decatur; also four great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Ginger Boyd.
Visitation will be today from noon until 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church Stephenson Chapel with service following at 2 p.m. with Reverend Roger Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be the Price-Kuby Sunday school class.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Hospice of the Valley or The building fund at First Baptist Church. Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family.
