John Lester Yates, 87, of Town Creek, Ala., died on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Edie; his sons, Glenn (Joy) Yates, and Johnny (Myra) Yates; his grandchildren, Andy (Janice) Yates, Allen (Tiffany) Yates, Jenna (Drew) Morrow, and Julie (Lee) Taylor; and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Yates served in the Navy during World War II and after completion of college at Auburn University, he moved to Town Creek, Ala., where he worked as a Vo. Ag. teacher at Hazelwood High School and principal at Lawrence County Center of Technology until his retirement. He centered much of his life around his faith and First Baptist Church of Town Creek where he served as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher for over 50 years. In his life as a Christian teacher, he was a model for former students and friends.
Visitation is Sunday, Jan. 26, from 5-7 p.m. at Jackson Memory Funeral Home with funeral services on Monday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Town Creek. Burial to follow at Holly Pond Cemetery in Holly Pond, Ala.
