John Key – Obituary

Funeral services for Mr. John Key, age 92 of Talladega, formerly of Birmingham, will be held Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland, with Lakeside Hospice Chaplain Dr. Larry Wimberly officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Ashland City Cemetery.

Mr. Key passed away Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the Col. Robert L. Harris Veterans Home in Pell City. He was a native of Freedom, Kentucky, served for 2 years in the United States Navy during WWII before being honorably discharged as a Seaman Second Class. He worked as a Cylinder Pressman’s Helper with Baird Ward Printing in Nashville before moving to Birmingham where he worked as a pressman for over forty years with the Birmingham News.

He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Drummonds (Ragan) of Ashland; four grandchildren: Chris Smith of Ashland, Bart Smith of Pell City, Brad Smith of Ashland and Chassidy Key of Memphis, TN and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents: William Ernest Key and Flossie Francis Key; his wife Margaret Key; two sons: David Key and Gary Richard Key; three sisters and one brother.

Pallbearers will be: Ragan Drummonds, Chris Smith, Bart Smith, Brad Smith, Dawson Smith and Mason Smith.

The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland, Tuesday December 18, 2018 from 12:30 P.M. until service time at 2:00 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Lakeside Hospice, Inc., 4010 Masters Rd. Pell City, Al 35128 or to the Col. Robert L. Harris Veterans Home, 7054 Veterans Parkway, Pell City, Alabama 35128.
