John Henry Chitwood, 94½, of Decatur passed peacefully, with a smile, into his Heavenly Father’s arms on Friday, February 15, 2013. John was born to the late Reverend T.J. and Beatrice Chitwood on August 17, 1918, in Fort Payne. He graduated from Huntsville High School in 1940. He served in the Army Air Force in West Palm Beach, Fla., as an MP and worked for Gulf Oil Corporation for over 25 years in many capacities. He was a member of Ninth Street United Methodist Church in Decatur. John was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys, of 57 years; his only son, Wayne B. Chitwood (Deborah); sister, Helen Tuck (Bobby), Dalton, Ga.; brother-in-law, Frank Brooks II, Las Cruces, N.M.; five nieces and nephews; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many lifelong friends. He had a love for God and people. John never knew a stranger and made a huge impact on every person’s life he knew or touched. John’s family would like to acknowledge and thank all the friends, doctors, and especially the Vitas Hospice Team 181 for all the support, kindness, compassion and remarkable quality of care that was given to him and the family.
