John F. Orban, age 83, a resident of Mt. Pleasant passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Maury Regional Hospital surrounded by members of his family. He was a longtime parishioner of Saint Catherine Catholic Church of Columbia.
The family will receive friends Friday, December 16th from 4:00 to 8:00 pm William’s Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant at which time the Fleet Reserve will perform the Navy’s Three Bell Ceremony. Services will be held Saturday December 17th at 1:00 pm at William’s Funeral Home led by Deacon Ray Siebold with burial to follow at Spencer Hill Cemetery with full Military Honors. Disabled American Veterans Chapter 22 will serve as pallbearers.
Born and raised in Bethlehem Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late John Orban Sr. and Mary Messics Orban who both emigrated from Hungary in 1898.
Mr. Orban served in the Army from 1950-1953 with the Third Infantry in Washington D.C. While serving in Washington, he met his wife Christine Orban in 1951 who worked as a civilian with the Navy Department. Mr. Orban then left the Army to pursue a civilian life in his home town of Bethlehem. Mr. Orban then joined the U. S. Navy where he served for 27 years and then retired in 1985 and moved to Mt. Pleasant, TN.
His affiliations with military organizations include member of the American Legion Chapters 19 and 10, Commander of Columbia Disabled American Veterans from 1990-2000. A member of Branch 44 of the Fleet Reserve Association (President 1989-1990) and a lifetime member of the NCO Association. He was instrumental in procuring the first DAV van to transport veterans to the VA hospital in Nashville and Murfreesboro and drove the van for many years. He had a passion for helping others, especially veterans and their families.
Mr. Orban was consistently involved with the Boy Scouts of America as a Leader until his Navy retirement.
He is survived by the love of his life of 65 years, Christine (Henson) Orban; his children Mary Vivian Moore (Stanley), David Orban and Kenneth Orban (Deborah). His grandchildren Benjamin Orban and Bethany Orban.
He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Beverly Orban; siblings Theresa Orban, Margaret Orban, Vilma Kalman, Irene Skldowski, Nancy Dyback, Frank Orban; His parents John Orban Sr. and Mary Messics Orban.
