Funeral service for John Danley “Dan” Abston, 80, of Orange Beach will be Friday, February 1, 2019, at 2 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. Interment will be in Burningtree Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Abston, who passed away on Monday, January 28, 2019, in Pensacola, Florida, was born September 7, 1938, in Florence. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Abston; and his parents, Roy Laverne Abston and Etoyle Danley Abston.
Dan graduated from T.M. Rogers High School in 1956, and then graduated from Florence State College (UNA) in 1961. He married his sweetheart, Carolyn, on March 17, 1960. They lived in Decatur from 1961 – 1996. Dan and Carolyn were married for 56 years. While in Decatur they were members of Beltline Church of Christ. They moved to Orange Beach, AL in 1996, where they made their retirement dreams come true. He was a member of Gulf Shores Church of Christ.
He is survived by his son, Mac Abston (Elaine) of Huntsville; daughter, Dannie Deffenbaugh (Mark) of Pensacola; two brothers, Roy Abston (Phyllis) and Steve Abston (Carolyn), both of Florence; five grandchildren, Kristen Deffenbaugh Snell (Jonathan) of Homewood, Jenna Deffenbaugh England (Tyler) of Mobile, Evan Abston of Hoover, and Ethan Abston and Eli Abston of Huntsville; two great-grandchildren, Addison England and Mary Ryan Snell; and his many nephews.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to Gulf Shores Church of Christ building fund or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
