Dr. John C. Lowery, 87, passed away on Friday, February 7th surrounded by his loving family. A native of Red Bay, he graduated from Red Bay High School where he played varsity basketball. He attended Auburn University for undergraduate school and graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Lowery opened his first veterinary practice in Red Bay which was interrupted when he was drafted into the army during the Vietnam conflict. He served honorably with the rank of Captain for four years. Upon leaving the army he opened the Shoals Animal Hospital in Muscle Shoals in 1966. He retired reluctantly after more than forty years of serving his many clients and their animals.
He was a beloved veterinarian throughout the Shoals area, always bringing the highest standards of care to his practice.
An avid outdoorsman and equestrian, he and his late wife Barbara founded Full Cry Hounds and served as Masters of the hunt, joined by members throughout north Alabama. The club has flourished and remains active today. He was also instrumental in introducing the Jack Russell terrier breed to American dog lovers and judged terrier trials throughout the country and Canada.
A master gardener, he was renowned for his world class tomatoes enjoyed by friends and neighbors.
He was predeceased in death by his parents, Clara and Arlie Lowery. He is survived by his wife, Mary Reynolds Miller; brother, Dr. James Lowery (Renee); daughter, Hope Williamson (Brian); son, Allen Lowery (Barbara); son, Edward Lowery (Kim); stepson, Jay Nichols; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and special friend, Lynne Willis.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
