Joe Larry Richie, age 86, was born on July 20, 1939, in Summerville, Tennessee, the youngest of three children born to John A. and Maudie Mae Cox Richie. He departed this life on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at his residence.
Mr. Joe was a man who never met a stranger and could always bring a smile to those around him. Described by his family as a ‘cut up,’ he had a wonderful sense of humor and loved telling jokes. He kept everyone entertained with his fun-loving spirit and his ability to make people laugh.
Music was a special part of Joe’s life. He was a talented musician and, years ago, was a member of the local band, The Star Dusters. He served as the drummer but could also play the guitar, piano, and harmonica. During his time with the band, he had the opportunity to play alongside Little David Wilkins and Charlie Rich, creating memories that he treasured throughout his life.
Joe also enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He loved hunting and fishing and was well known among family and friends for making what many considered the very best deer jerky around. When it came to sports, he was a devoted Atlanta Braves fan and enjoyed cheering on his favorite team.
A hardworking and dedicated provider, Joe spent several years employed at the Milan Arsenal before continuing his career at Leroy Somer in Lexington. Through his strong work ethic and commitment to his family, he earned the respect and admiration of all who knew him. He retired from Leroy Somer in 2006 after many years of faithful service.
Above all else, Joe’s greatest joy was his family. He shared sixty-seven wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Peggy McDaniel Richie, whom he married in March of 1959. Together they built a life centered on love, laughter, and family.
He leaves behind his devoted wife, Peggy McDaniel Richie; a daughter, Deborah Jo Day and her husband, David; a son, Larry Timothy ‘Tim’ Richie; and his beloved grandchildren, Mandy Griggs Gooch and her husband, Mark, Dallas Griggs and his wife, Holly, and Misty Griggs Sharp and her husband, Ben. Affectionately known as ‘Papaw Joe,’ he was also blessed with great grandchildren, Toni and Sam Powell and River and Canyon Sharp, and one great great grandchild, Landon Powell.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Keith Richie and Neil Richie.
Though his presence will be deeply missed, his family will forever cherish the memories of his laughter, his music, his stories, and the love he shared so freely.
