Joe C. Walters, 95, of Lacey’s Spring, AL, passed away on Friday, 8 March 2024, after a brief illness. Joe served his country by enlisting in the US Army, as part of the occupying Army in Japan at the end of World War II. He returned home to begin his education. After graduation from the University of Oklahoma, with a degree in Civil Engineering, he started working for the US Geological Survey. That led him to the hills of Kentucky where he met a “green eyed blond” that he married and lived with for the next 64 years. He continued to work for the federal government until he retired.

Joe and wife, Zula, had a special love for children with diabetes. They worked tirelessly to support the mission of Camp Seale Harris, dedicated to improving the lives of children living with the disease. They also found time to travel the globe extensively. He particularly loved cruises. They adored their six grandchildren and found time to make each one feel special.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Elizabeth Walters, wife, Zula, grandson, Luke, and son-in-law, Leland. Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Walters Manahan of Nolensville, Tennessee; son, Dr. David Walters, of Erwin, Tennessee; daughter-in-law, Katherine Walters (Mulford); five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and special friend, Phyllis Ward.

Visitation will begin at 1:00, Friday, March 15, at St. Stephens Episcopal Church with the funeral service following at 2:00. The Reverend Jeffrey K. Evans will officiate. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Heflin, Kentucky.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorials be made to Camp Seale Harris (https://campsealeharris.org/).
