Joe Berry, age 77, of Double Springs passed away Friday August 14, 2026, at Lakeland Community Hospital in Haleyville. He was born September 27, 1948 to Hubert and Pamelia Berry. Joe was a man of family. From the early age of around nine he helped his dad work to provide in those hard times. That day forward, his life was about work & family. Joe has worn many hats in his life. He was a logger, coal miner, long haul trucker for many years and helped his friend, Rick, start R&R Trucking where he remained shop foreman as long as he could. He was always the first one to work and usually the last one to leave. He said, “if you’re not an hour early you’re late.” He married his best friend and wife, Kathy (Chambers) Berry in July 26, 1971. He loved his family fiercely. It didn’t matter if you were his siblings, children, grandchildren or great grandchildren, he had your back even if you were wrong. Then he would whip you for it lol. He was a man of his word. If he said it, he meant it! The way we see him was he was a brilliant man, our “Big Sexy”, our giant of a person, a solid hand, a giving hand, our sounding board when we had issues, a teacher of many things. At most, we remember his love, his dedication to us, his smile, never leaving his house hungry, and his big bear hugs followed by whisker cheek kisses. Dad, job well done… Give all of our family, that has passed, a big hug for us. This isn’t the end, it’s just, “I’ll see you later. 10-4” Puppy Dog Visitation will be Monday August 17, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Nichols Funeral Home in Double Springs where the service will be held the following day on Tuesday August 18 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be at Double Springs Memorial Gardens. Joe is survived by his children, Shelby (Tim) Hixen, Felicia (Brent) Hood, and Justin (Beth) Berry; grandchildren, Liz (Chelsea Chancellor) Denard, Logan (Nicole) Blake, Kayla Stockman, Mason Shadix, Josie (Nick) Hardin, and Johnnie (Alexis) Benefield; great grandchildren, Emma Berry, Joe Berry, Dillon Berry, Sarah Berry, Braden Howton, Ryleigh Howton, Parker Blake, Zoe Johnson, Chloe Blake, Jimmy Tucker III, Breanna Stockman, Destiney Stockman, Abigail Stockman, Mela Hardin, Carter Hardin, and Paisley Benefield; sister, Myrtle Dean (Tony) Dickinson; and a host of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Pamelia Berry; wife, Kathy Berry; daughters, Relena Berry and Kristina Berry; brother, O’neal Berry; and infant sister.
