Joanne Adkins Harris, 90, of Madison, formerly of Huntsville, passed away Thursday. Mrs. Harris was the daughter of the late Lester P. and Zelma Thune Adkins. She was a graduate of the University of Chattanooga and held a Master’s degree in education from the University of Alabama. Joanne retired from the Huntsville City School System after having taught at Joe Bradley, Stone Middle School and Huntsville Middle School. She was very athletic, and in her retirement, she loved to play golf and travel extensively. She was very interested in genealogy and studying her Norwegian heritage. She volunteered at the Huntsville Public Library.
Survivors include daughter, Kathy Lee Harris James (Dr. Richard) of Bradenton, FL; son, John Leonard Harris (Debbie) of Huntsville; and grandsons, Jason and Justin James of Florida.
Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Monday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Maple Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Huntsville Public Library.
