Funeral service for Jewell Terry, age 90, formerly of Decatur, will be Friday, November 4, 2016, 12:00 p.m. at Southside Baptist Church, Decatur, AL, with Rev. Dr. Ben Hayes officiating and Shelton Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends for two hours prior to service. Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Terry died peacefully on November 1, 2016, at Diversicare of Big Springs in Huntsville, AL. Jewell was born March 15, 1926, in Decatur, AL, the daughter of E.E. and Mary Matthews.
On July 12, 1941, Jewell married the love of her life, Leo Terry. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage before Leo passed away in 2009.
Jewell thoroughly enjoyed her family and friends. She especially loved her church, Southside Baptist, her Sunday School class, music, and sports. She was an avid reader and loved to bowl. She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Berry in Decatur for several years and then spent many years with Chemstrand (Monsanto) working as a lab technician in the dye labs before retiring.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Edward Matthews (Katherine), and Carl Matthews (Joan), and one sister, Barbara Melhorn (Reg).
Jewell is survived by her son, Wayne Terry (Judi) of Huntsville; two brothers, Lannie Matthews (Misty) of Grand Junction, CO, and Everett Matthews (Claire) of Spring Hill, FL; one grandson, Jason Terry (Gina); three granddaughters, Paula Cox (Darryl), Kaitlyn Terry, and Emma Terry; two great-granddaughters, Lauren and Olivia Brasher; nephew, Anthony Randolph; niece, Linda White; and several other nephews and nieces.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jewell’s name to Southside Baptist Church, 709 Ninth Street, Decatur, AL 35601, or the Alzheimer’s Association National Office, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
