Jerry Leonard Gibbs passed away peacefully at his home in Brownsboro on August 13, 2021. He was born on April 22, 1928, in Tarrant City to Ellwyn Leonard Gibbs and Verna Whitley Gibbs. He spent his growing up-years in Blount County, graduating from Blount County High School. He graduated from Bethel College in Tennessee where he played football. After college, he taught and coached football at Appalachian High School for several years before working at NASA and the U.S. Army Missile Command. He retired in 1993 and enjoyed a long retirement. He enjoyed pistol marksmanship, playing golf, Alabama football, and participating in the Lions Club where he served as president of the Huntsville Pacesetters. He was life-long member of the United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Tom Gibbs, and his oldest son, Jerry Leonard (Len) Gibbs Jr.
He is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Kathryn Pruett Gibbs; sons, Cary Pruett Gibbs and wife, Diane, and Dale Lee Gibbs and wife, Teresa; daughter-in-law, Athelia Gibbs; grandchildren, Andrew S. Gibbs and wife, Rita, Joy Gibbs, and Brent Lee Gibbs; great-grandchildren, Madison Gibbs and Gavin Green; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 18th at First United Methodist Church Chapel. The funeral service will follow at 11 with the Rev. Coy Hallmark officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery, Oneonta, Alabama.
