A Graveside Funeral service and Interment for Jeanette Brown Wood, 87, will be Monday, May 4, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Mt. Carmel Baptist Cemetery in Guntersville, Alabama, with Bro. Beaul Hunkapiller officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. No Visitation is scheduled. She was born on May 4,1938 and passed away on April 30. 2026.
She is survived by two Sons – Sam Wood (Judi), and Tony Wood (Susan), three Sisters – Louise Brown, Sally Brown, and Rachel Brown, three Grandchildren – Johnathon Wood, Brittany Wilson (Jason), and Jennifer Wood and two Great Grandchildren – Logan Wood and Mattie Wilson.
She was preceded in death by her ex-husband- Donald Lee Wood of Guntersville; two sisters- Mary Love Thomas and Ginger Calhoun; and her brother-Lawrence “Buddy” Brown.
She was born at home to Lawrence and Alzie Mae Brown on May 4, 1938, and grew up atop Georgia Mountain in Guntersville, AL. She was the eldest of seven children. She attended Marshall County High School, Snead State College and “THE” University of Alabama. She graduated from Alabama with BS and MS degrees in Social Work in 1973 and 1977, respectively.
As a Social Worker, she investigated abuse, neglect and exploitation of the elderly and disabled. She was a pioneer in her field, and in 1975, her work resulted in the State’s passage of the Alabama Adult Protective Service Law. After 25-years with the Alabama Department of Human Resources, she became the Director of the Tennessee Valley Outreach.
She was a trailblazer in both her personal and professional life. She was one of a select few to successfully complete both the Pacific and Appalachian Trails. She was a member of numerous hiking clubs and taught hiking classes through Continuing Education classes with the Decatur City Schools. She loved the theatre, travel, gardening, and the outdoors. She was an avid reader, a member of the Lone Ranger Club as a child, and a private pilot as an adult.
She lived life on her own terms.
