Jeanene B. Merrell 91 of Elkton, Tennessee, stepped into the glory of Heaven on Dec. 3, 2022, at Ivy Crest Assisted Living, Pulaski, TN
She was born February 12, 1931, in Minor Hill, Tennessee. She was the third child of six, born to Nathan and Ona Mae Bass. After graduating from Minor Hill High School, she decided to attend college and become a teacher.
After earning a Teaching Degree from Middle Tennessee State University. She married Joe Merrell on June 6, 1954. Their son, Greg was born and outside of her Salvation, he was her greatest joy. She taught at Elkton High School for 34 years. She taught Business and History classes. She never stopped being a teacher. And very seldom did she forget a student and always had a story to tell.
She was an active member and Sunday School teacher at Elkton Baptist Church. She also graced the choir at church with her beautiful Alto voice. She and her husband, Joe were members of the Gideon’s International. Serving in the distribution of Bibles. She always had a Servant’s heart. She was known for her wonderful cooking and her Sourdough bread. She was very active in the local Home Demonstration Club. You’ll find her tried and true recipes in many local cookbooks. Summers were spent raising a big garden to share with others in the community. Working in her flowerbeds and helping Joe mend fences, picking blackberries and keeping excellent cattle records for their family farm in Bunker Hill, TN.
After her retirement from the Giles County School System, she worked the local elections and worked Meals on Wheels and continued to be busy in the community.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joe Merrell. Brothers, Dwight Bass, Julian Bass. Sisters, Elise Bass, Virginia Hill.
Survivors include her sister, Mrs. Helen Walters of Trinity, AL, son Greg Merrell and wife, Jackie of Elkton, TN. Grandson Ben Rolin and wife Mari-Anne of Elkton, TN and great grandchildren Wyatt Rolin and Roxie Rolin.
Also surviving is her friend, and care giver, Judy Pope. We can never thank her enough for all she has done for her and her family.
She received excellent care and love from the staff and residents at Ivy Crest Assisted Living. Their assistance will never be forgotten.
Visitation will be Tuesday, December 6, 2022, from 3:00 until 5:00 PM at Bennett-May Funeral Home followed by the Funeral Service at 5:00 PM with Bro. Eddie Woodard and Chris Bolt officiating. Private Burial will be at Giles Memory Gardens, Pulaski, Tennessee.
