Obituary of Jean Moore Smith Jean Moore Smith, age 79, passed away on October 1, 2026, at her home in Moundville, Alabama.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, October 5, 2026, at Collier-Butler Funeral Home Chapel, with Brother Scott Hassell officiating. Burial will follow at Crestwood Cemetery, with Brother Wayne Smith leading the graveside service. Brother Allen Hudson will provide music. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 4, from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home, and again on Monday from 11:30 a.m. until the service begins.

Jean devoted 27 years to teaching in the Gadsden City Schools before retiring. A 1965 graduate of Emma Sansom High School, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Jacksonville State University and her master’s degree in education from the University of Alabama. She was a member of Southside First Baptist Church and a lifetime associate member of McLaughlin Marine Corps Detachment 1029.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Larry Smith, with whom she shared almost 49 years of marriage; her parents, Charles and Johnie B. Moore; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Geneva Smith; her brother and sister-in-law, Frankie and Jan Moore; and her brother-in-law, Bill Smith.

Jean is survived by her loving and faithful daughter, Susan Smith Blair (Chad), of Moundville, Alabama; granddaughter, Emily Blair (Billy Vaught), of Moundville, Alabama; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wayne and Paula Smith, of Jonesboro, Georgia; sister and brother-in-law, Kay and Leon Foster, of Marianna, Florida; and sister-in-law, Deborah Smith, of Oneonta, Alabama.

She also leaves behind her nieces and nephews, Jeremy Moore (Ardis), of Destrehan, Louisiana; Philip Smith Sr. (Yen), of Jonesboro, Georgia; Melanie Foster, of Marianna, Florida; Jenny Harper (Matt), of Raleigh, North Carolina; and Kim Blue (Bill), of Dallas, Georgia. Her great-nieces and great-nephews include Brock Moore, Connor Boudreaux, Hannah Adams (Mason), Hayden Blue, Philip Smith Jr. (Angel), Michael Smith (Mackenzie), Arlie Harper, Sam Harper, and Lucy Harper. Her great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews include Rylan Smith, Everlyn Smith, Philip Smith III, Logan Smith, and Darryn Allgood.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy Moore, Philip Smith Sr., Bill Blue, Brackston Causey, Ricky Smith, Billy Vaught, and Randy Gossett.

Honorary pallbearers include Jack Causey, the late Johnny Bolton, the late Tony Starkey, Mike Moon, Mickey Stephens, and the nurses and staff of Enhabit Hospice.

The family extends special gratitude to her primary nurse, Kim Watkins, and to all the caregivers who stayed with and cared for Jean over the past three years.
