Janie Luther, who was a much beloved servant of the Lord, passed away at her daughter’s, Patsy’s, home surrounded by children playing, the baby being passed around, meals being cooked, talking in the living room, and family members constantly at her side.
Janie was born to Cary and Myrtle Powell Conlee in Thaxton, Mississippi, in Pontotoc County, the youngest of nine children. A 1954 graduate of Thaxton High School, Janie attended Itawamba Junior College and earned an Education degree from the University of Mississippi. She always said her husband, Wendell, made her go to college. Wendell and Janie married on May 29, 1955. Their union was blessed with six children.
At just 20 years old, Janie began teaching in the Beckham Community where she managed a classroom of 60 third and fourth graders by herself. She went on to teach at Randolph and Pontotoc Attendance Center. When her fifth child was born, Janie stepped away from teaching to become a stay-at-home mother. In the years that followed, she lovingly cared for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, becoming a constant, nurturing presence in their lives.
Always willing to lend a helping hand, Janie also supported her children in their various endeavors—whether assisting in a law office, helping in the assisted living facility, pitching in at a family-owned convenience store, or going door-to-door to campaign, her family could always count on her to help.
Janie lived her faith daily, studying God’s word with dedication and applying its teachings through her compassionate actions. She had a servant’s heart, always willing to care not only for her family and friends but also for those whom society had cast aside. Although Janie could practice tough love, she believed in meeting people where they were and loving them unconditionally.
Janie played a key role in establishing Green Valley Baptist Church through an outreach effort of First Baptist Church. She knocked on doors and invited people to church when services were held in a used mobile home. Janie was a member of Laodicea Primitive Baptist Church at Lafayette Springs, and she loved her church dearly. Janie lived a humble life in order to always pay her way, go on a few trips, and to help others.
An adventurous spirit, Janie traveled widely across the United States and internationally. She believed in staying active, faithfully attending the Pontotoc Wellness Center, participating in a local bowling league, and engaging with her community through the Pontotoc County Historical Society and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a founding member of the Pontotoc Dulcimer Club.
Janie Luther’s legacy is one of faith, love, service, and strength. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, June 3, 2025, from 5-8PM at Baldwin Memorial Funeral Home in Pontotoc and Wednesday, June 4, 2025, 11AM until service time of 1PM at Baldwin Memorial Funeral Home in Pontotoc.
