Jane Elizabeth Esslinger Harris – Obituary

Jane Elizabeth Esslinger Harris, 91, departed this life on November 27,2018, at the Carillon Assisted Living Center of Garner, North Carolina.

 

Jane is survived by her husband of 69 years, Billy R. Harris; her daughter, Elizabeth Harris Culverhouse (Bill); and son, Alan W. Harris (Valerie); eight grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren, her beloved sister, Winifred Beason; her brother-in-law, Bill Cartwright; her cousins, nephews and their families, and many dear friends.

 

Jane was born on April 27, 1927, to Thomas and Aileen Esslinger, and lived most of her life in Huntsville, Al. Health issues forced Jane and her husband to move in with their son in South Carolina before moving to be near their daughter in North Carolina.

 

Jane proudly attended Auburn University before marriage to Bill on July 30, 1949. Jane worked in downtown Huntsville until marriage and again when her children went to school at Madison Academy.  She spent years working at Huntsville Utilities, Dr. Eugene Tate’s office and retired as office manager to Ed Mitchell, CEO of Huntsville Jetport.  It was during her time at the Jetport she got to meet and know several famous astronauts.  Jane also catered weddings, was an excellent cook, and served others for many years alongside Bill at Mayfair church of Christ.  In recent years, they were involved in the nursing home ministry supported by Mayfair.

 

Funeral services will be held at Laughlin Chapel, Laughlin Funeral Home, 2320 Bob Wallace Avenue, Huntsville, Al on December 8 at 11:00 am with visitation at 10:00 am. Burial will take place at Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville.
