James William “JW” Thornton, age 94, of Lester, Alabama passed away holding his grandson Hunter’s hand on May 8th 2026. Mr. Thornton was born on October 29th, 1931 to William Thornton and Lillie Mae Breeding Thornton in Giles County, Tennessee.
Mr. Thornton was a humble and hardworking man who enjoyed tinkering with clocks and all kinds of mechanical things. He was known for his kind spirit, strong work ethic, and willingness to help others. He leaves behind many cherished memories with those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his children, James “Randall” Thornton (Wanda), Darryl Lynn Thornton (Janice), and Dana Thornton Hill (Doug); seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; four siblings; along with several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Mr. Thornton was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 64 years, LE Thornton; and his son-in-law, Bobby Joe Hill.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 13th, 2026, from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM at Hester Chapel Church of Christ. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM at Hester Chapel Church of Christ with Mark Johnson and Scott Pepper officiating. Burial will follow at Hester Chapel Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Colton Hill, James Thornton, Cody Smith, Hunter Hill, Luke Thornton, and Joey Russell.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to his grandson, Hunter, for being such a loving and dedicated caretaker.
