James Warren Kientz, a devoted husband, father, Papaw, friend, and faithful servant to his country, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 27, 2026, in Jackson, Tennessee. He was 82 years old.
James was born on August 3, 1944, in Chewalla, Tennessee. On January 21, 1971, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Nina Ellis. Their marriage was a beautiful testament to love, commitment, and companionship, and they shared 55 years together.
James proudly and honorably served his country for 42 years, serving in both the United States Army and the Tennessee National Guard. He retired at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer Five (CW-5), the highest warrant officer rank, reflecting his extraordinary knowledge, dedication, and leadership as a master-level technical and tactical expert. His military service was a source of great pride, and he faithfully answered the call to serve his country throughout his distinguished career.
While James accomplished much in his professional life, those who knew him best will remember him most for the love he gave his family and the simple joys he treasured. He and Nina enjoyed traveling in their motorhome, making memories along the way. James loved playing golf, fishing, and dominoes, spending time with friends, and caring for his beloved pets. He enjoyed cooking on the grill and took particular pride in his garden, where he could spend hours tending to his tomatoes.
James was a man who took pride in himself and in the way he presented himself to others. He was rarely without his cologne and always took care with his appearance. These little details reflected the pride and care he brought to all aspects of his life.
A man of faith, James taught Sunday School for many years and was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Selmer. His faith and willingness to serve others were an important part of who he was.
Above all, James was a wonderful husband, daddy, and Papaw. He cherished his family and treasured the time spent with those he loved. His presence brought strength, warmth, and love to those around him, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
James is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Nina Kientz of Selmer, Tennessee; his daughter, Michelle Kientz of Selmer, Tennessee; his grandson, Rhett James Kientz of Oxford, Mississippi; and a host of loving family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Bettye Shannon Leonard.
James leaves behind a life of faithful service, enduring love, cherished friendships, and countless memories. His legacy will live on through his family, the people he served, the lives he touched, and the love he shared so freely.
He served his country with honor, loved his family deeply, and lived a life worthy of remembrance. He will be greatly missed and forever loved.
