Dr. James W. Smith, 77, of Athens, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017 at his residence. Dr. Smith was born Nov. 25, 1939 in Madison County, Alabama to William Thomas Smith and Matilda May Richardson Smith. He was a member of the Berea Baptist Church, a U.S. Navy veteran and a retired Pediatrician in Athens for 33 years.

Funeral services will be today, Jan. 16, 2017, 1 p.m. at Berea Baptist Church with Pat Lawrence and Greg Patrick officiating. Burial will be in the Copeland Cemetery. Visitation will be today, 10 a.m. until service time at the church.

Survivors include wife, Patsy Patterson Smith, of Athens; daughters, Lisa Smith Wilkes and husband, Gary, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Susan Smith Nelson and husband, Bryan, of Athens, Alabama; brothers, Dr. Tom Smith, of Athens, Alabama, Dr. Roger Smith, of Birmingham, Alabama; sisters, Patricia Lambert, of Athens, Alabama, June Smith and Brenda Bartton, both of Huntsville, Alabama; stepson, David Russell and wife, Leisha, of Athens, Alabama; stepdaughters, Sandy Russell, Kim Evans and husband, Brian, both of Athens, Alabama; and ten grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jake Nelson, Harrison Nelson, Clay Russell, Isaac Evans, Todd Barton, and Greg Lambert.
