James Roger Lay, 74, of Cullman, Alabama, was born March 12, 1952, and passed away September 27, 2026.From his early years, Roger learned the value of steady effort and perseverance. Growing up in Cullman, he picked cotton alongside his brothers and sister, experiences that shaped a man known for hard work, honesty, and a quiet bravery. He also found joy in simple, lasting pleasures—playing basketball at Vinemont High school and fishing with his brothers—moments that reflected the kind-hearted spirit so many came to cherish.
Roger served in the Army and was stationed in Germany, where he received several awards for his service. He carried that same sense of duty, integrity, and commitment into civilian life, becoming a very well-known and respected drywall business owner. More than 30 years ago, Roger was saved and began a lifelong walk of faith that remained an important part of who he was. Through the years, he remained generous in the ways that mattered most—showing up, lending a hand, and offering steady support. His kindness, faith, and willingness to help others earned him the respect and affection of all who knew him, making him deeply beloved by his family, friends, and community.
In retirement, Roger’s days were often spent enjoying his dogs and grandchildren while sitting on his front porch, a familiar and comforting presence to those around him.
Roger was preceded in death by James Ted Lay, father; Jewell Angenette Lay, mother; William Bill Lay, brother; and Laverne Roberts, sister.
Roger is survived by Delisha Goodwin (Keith), daughter; Barbara Ann Lay (Brett Gordon), daughter; Josh Lay, son; Zack Lay, son; Jon Lay, son; Jo Lay, sister-in-law; Terry Lay (Brenda), brother; and Rick Lay (Sheila), brother and host of grandchildren.
The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude for his caregiver, Libby, who was amazing to him and truly was his best friend.
Roger never said goodbye—he always said “later.” We miss you Roger and we love you. Rest in peace.
