James Robert Akin, 73, known as Jim passed from this life on August 30, 2026, after a hard-fought battle with Parkinson’s. Jim was born in Cairo, Illinois to MSGT James L. Akin and Grace Haney Akin; and, talked of the childhood adventures he enjoyed being a “military brat”. Jim was an active member of Cross Point Church of Christ. He graduated from Butler High School Huntsville in 1971, received a BS degree from UNA in 1976, and MS degree in 1984. Jim’s work life included Consolidated Aluminum, Chem-haulers (later Tri-mac), and Dieco Tool & Die. But, his most enjoyed work began as a full-time cattle farmer in 2002. He prided himself in raising registered Charolais cattle and mentored many young cattlemen, sharing his knowledge and love for both cattle and the land. Jim was a member of the Lauderdale County Cattlemen’s Association and the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association for over 25 years. He served in many positions in both, including President and Board member. Jim’s greatest honor was being chosen as President of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association in 2015; and, during the year traveled the state to many counties. He also served on the board of the Tennessee Valley Stockyard. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; Father and Mother in Law, Floyd and Jean Robertson, who Jim credited with showing him the cattle business and country living; brother, Joe Akin and sister, Marina Tuberville. Jim met his wife Kay Robertson at her workplace. They married on May 19, 1978, and enjoyed 48 wonderful years working together. He is survived by his wife, Kay; sisters Deanna Loden (Bill) and Holly Hardiman (Wayne); sister-in-law, Connie Robertson; several nieces and nephews, and many friends. The service honoring Jim will be Thursday, September 3, 2026 at 3:00 P.M. at Greenhill Funeral Home with visitation from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. before the service. Frank Mills, Minister of Cross Point Christ and Brian Smith, will officiate. Burial will follow at Pettus Cemetery, Hwy 64 Lexington, AL. Serving as Pallbearers will be Jeremy Behel, Charles Crow, David Faulkner, Anthony Garoute, Greg Hamner, and Wes Hamner. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of Lauderdale and Alabama Cattlemen’s Associations; Jack Batts, Randy Connell, Ralph Ekonen, Kevin Holden, Eric Lovell, and Larry Pettus. Special thanks to Dr. Felix Morris, for both medical attention and friendship, Hospice of North Alabama RN, Tara Elliot and CNA, Penny Green; caregivers Tiffany Holder and Amy McDonald for their unwavering love, help, and support throughout Jim’s PD downturn.
