Memorial service for James Olon Newell, age 76, of Trinity, will be 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 29, 2025, at Parkway Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor George Sawyer officiating.  Guestbook available at www.parkwayfunerals.com.

Mr. Newell, who died Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at his residence, was born November 15, 1949, in Elaine, AR to Elbert Alvin Newell and Bertha Mae Franklin Newell.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bob Newell; brothers-in-law, Larry Hector and Hollis Williams; and sisters-in-law, Anne Newell and Tillie Newell.

James Olon Newell, a man of profound faith, quiet strength, and unwavering service, passed away peacefully.

A proud and highly decorated veteran, James served his country with distinction during the Vietnam War. His bravery on the battlefield was recognized through numerous commendations, including the Bronze Star Medal with Valor and the Army Commendation Medal with Valor.

His service was marked by the grit of a true soldier, earning him the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Air Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars. James also wore two Overseas Service Bars and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal (1960). While he carried the weight of his service with humility, those honors stood as a testament to his character and his commitment to his fellow soldiers.

James loved music. An accomplished harmonica player, he didn’t just play tunes; he shared stories. He had a unique way of ensuring that those around him didn’t just hear the music, but really listened to the words. To James, a song was a lesson, and he made sure everyone “truly got it.”

James enjoyed the quiet outdoors. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and gardening. He took great pride in maintaining his home and having the nicest yard and garden around. He had a gift for growth, nurturing both the earth and the community around him. He was a beloved and generous neighbor.

Above all, James loved Jesus deeply. His faith was his compass and an anchor for his soul.

James Olon Newell will be remembered for his courage in war, his ability to find the divine in a well-written lyric or a blooming flower, his quick wit, and his love for Jesus. His family is rejoicing with him and finding comfort in knowing that he has finally returned home and is truly at rest in the arms of Jesus.

He is survived by his son, Shane Newell; daughters, Amber Poelman (Andy) and Laura Horn (Mark); brother, Al Newell; sisters, Sammie Hector, Nel Stockton (James “Sonny”), and Jean Williams; and six grandchildren, Rosie, Charlotte, Ellie, Annie, Blake, and Madison.
