James Loyd “Jay” Bulman, 84, passed away on February 25, 2024. A memorial service will be held Monday, April 29, at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Jay was born in Scottsboro, AL on November 28, 1939, to Horace Clifford and Mary Nell Petty Bulman. He attended Scottsboro City Schools until his senior year when he graduated from Mars Hill Bible School. He attended David Lipscomb College in Nashville, TN, and the University of North Alabama (UNA) majoring in Secondary Education and English. He graduated from UNA in 1963. He worked as a Procedures Writer and Librarian at Boeing Aerospace in Huntsville, AL until the Saturn V Rockets contract expired. He entered the teaching field in 1970 and earned his Secondary Education Masters at UNA in 1973. He completed additional Master’s credits in English at UNA and Ole Miss. Mr. Bulman “Mr. B” taught senior English, Drama, Speech, and German at Muscle Shoals High School until 1996 and taught various English courses in the community during that time. After retirement, he taught part time with the English Department at UNA until 2013. In addition, Mr. Bulman taught English part time at Northwest-Shoals Community College for forty-four years, retiring in 2015. He enjoyed writing stories, essays, and poetry, and was a member of the Alabama Writer’s Guild. He was a member of Valdosta Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Turman Bulman; parents; and brother, Brewster Bulman.
He is survived by his daughter, Kim Appleton (Kevin), Atlanta, GA; his son, Kevin Bulman of Sao Paulo, Brazil; and grandchildren, Karen Bulman of Sao Paulo, Brazil and Henry Appleton of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by his sisters, Winnie Gay Lewis, Florence, AL, and Mary Kay Hylkema (Derek), Jackson, TN; and nieces and nephews.
Mr. Bulman greatly appreciated his family, friends, teaching associates, and students who gave blessed meaning to his life.
