James Herman Homan, Jr. died Thursday, December 19, 2024, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born October 25, 1933, to Herman and Dot Buskirk Homan. He was a lifelong resident of the Shannon area, attending Shannon High School and graduating from the University of Mississippi in 1956.

After college he attended naval officer’s training school in Rhode Island and served in the United States Navy as an officer aboard the Guided Missile Cruiser, USS Canberra.

In 1957, Herman married his childhood sweetheart, Betty Homan. Upon leaving the Navy, Herman went to work in the water well drilling business. In 1970, he opened Herman Homan Hardware store in Shannon.

He was a lifelong member of Shannon United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Tupelo American Legion.

In retirement, Herman loved working on projects in his shop, traveling, telling a good story and giving directions.

Herman is survived by his wife, Betty Homan; daughters, Leslie Zimmerman (Brian), Lisa Snead (Chuck); son, Jim Homan (Shelley); grandchildren, Grace Powlus (Stephen), David Snead, Taylor Snead, Sara Beth Webb (William), Maggie Snead, Luke Homan, Molly Richey (Austin), Miller Renfrow (Ross), and Daniel Bristow; great-grandchildren, Clara James Powlus, Hatcher Powlus, Reed Powlus, Charlie Renfrow, Marion Richey; and two siblings, David Homan (Jackie), and Joanne Montgomery (Roy).

He was preceded in death by his parents; Herman and Dot Homan; and sister, Costa Homan Hill.

Visitation will be at 1 p.m. until service time Sunday, December 22, 2024, at Pegues in Tupelo.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 22, 2024, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of Pegues. Private graveside services will follow at Shannon Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Shane Homan, Patrick Homan, Mark Montgomery, Michael Montgomery, Chris Hill, and Randy Grover.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Shannon United Methodist Church and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
