James Greer Joyner, affectionately known as “Jimmy” to family and friends, passed away on October 17, 2026, at the age of 73, following a courageous five-year battle with cancer.
Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Jimmy grew up in Fort Valley, Georgia, where he formed friendships he cherished throughout his life. A talented football player, he played three years at Fort Valley High School, attracting recruiting interest from the University of Georgia and Florida State University. After transferring schools for his senior year, he was proud to be part of a state championship football team in 1970.
Jimmy graduated from the University of Alabama and spent time student teaching in Mexico City. He later enjoyed a career as a computer programmer, including many years as a NASA contractor, before retiring from Booz Allen Hamilton.
Naturally quiet and reserved, Jimmy had a warm personality and a wonderful sense of humor. A devoted Alabama Crimson Tide fan, he loved cheering on his team and teasing the Auburn fans in his family. He also had a lifelong fascination with space and astronomy, often waking his children in the middle of the night to watch meteor showers. He dreamed of having his own backyard observatory and enjoyed science fiction, especially Star Trek, along with reading and reality television.
Above all, Jimmy cherished his family. He was a devoted father and grandfather who showed his love through his steady presence, generosity, and willingness to help. He enjoyed attending sporting events, especially Huntsville Stars baseball games with a bag of roasted peanuts. Even as his health declined, he attended a softball game for two of his granddaughters earlier this year, once again enjoying his familiar bag of peanuts.
Jimmy is survived by his children, Jennifer Beard; Laura Wackenhut and her husband, Eloi; and Joslynn Joyner and her spouse, Sharmell. He also leaves behind eleven grandchildren: Lilly Hood, Sierra Beard, Jordan Beard, David Beard, Mark Beard, Luke Beard, Jersey Sitko, Olivia Wackenhut, Aria Wackenhut, James Joyner II, and Ashley Joyner. He is also survived by his younger brother, Russ Joyner, along with beloved aunts, cousins, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin Joyner and Louise Jones.
Though often a quiet presence, Jimmy’s love and the memories he created will remain with his family always.
Roll Tide, Dad.
