James Franklin Goodman of Winchester passed away on June 24, 2023 at his residence at the age of 75.
A native of Decherd, Dr. Goodman graduated from Franklin County High in 1965, then attended Columbia State Community College and the University of Tennessee, before receiving his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Oklahoma State University.
Dr. Goodman had a private practice in Clarksville before joining the United States Air Force and moving to Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. Dr. Goodman then earned a Masters in Public Health from the University of North Carolina while stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, NC. Their family then moved to Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, Louisiana and Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska.
While in the military, Dr. Goodman graduated from Squadron Officer School, Air Command & Staff College and Air War College. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, then worked as a dietician at Rush Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi.
Dr. Goodman was a songwriter and loved singing and playing his Gibson 12 string guitar. Some of his favorite memories were owning a shrimp boat in Biloxi and making excursions in the Gulf of Mexico, spending time with family in Mobile, Alabama and watching college football and basketball.
Franklin is now reunited with his parents, the late Charles Goodman and Lala Selman Goodman VanBlaricum; his two sisters, the late Judy Goodman and Linda Goodman Smith and many other loved ones.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Melinda; three children Scottie Summerlin of Signal Mountain, Dan Goodman (Candie) of Enterprise, Mississippi and Chreyl Reid (Justin) of Collinsville, Mississippi; seven grandchildren Jake, Jack, Cadon, Olivea, Slayde, Peyton and Holland; two siblings, Dr. Charles Goodman of Milton and Robert Goodman of Athens; and many beloved relatives.
Dr. Goodman will have a private service at the Chattanooga National Cemetery at a later date.
