James Edward “Jimmy” Dawson, 88, retired well-known educator and resident of Caldwell Drive, died Friday, March 16, 2018 at NHC Maury Regional Transitional Care.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Kyle Harris and Randy Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 2:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M. and again from 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Born February 25, 1930 in Jefferson County, Texas, he was the son of the late Harry Edward Dawson and the late Minnie Beatricia Hughes Wheat Dawson. For 31 years, he was a Principal, Teacher, and Guidance Counselor for Maury County Public School System. In addition to being Elementary Principal, he was a Transportation Director, Title I Director, Assistant Superintendent of Business and Maintenance at Columbia Academy for 14 years. Mr. Dawson preached for many churches of Christ and was a member of Eastside church of Christ and more recently attended Berea church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, whom he married August 12, 1957, Beverly Roach Dawson of Columbia; daughter, Julie (Eric) Whisler of Nashville; son, Mark Dawson of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, Brittany Whisler (Adam) Shaw of Seattle, Washington; Joshua Whisler of Nashville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings.
Active pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers include men of Berea church of Christ, former colleagues and teachers from Maury County Public Schools and Columbia Academy.
