James Douglas Stephens, age 73 of Decherd, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Alive Hospice in Murfreesboro. A native of Franklin County, he was born in Sewanee on May 27, 1953, to the late James Francis and Lema Jean (Sims) Stephens. Before his retirement, James was employed in the Processing Department at Tennessee Tannery. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed being outside working in his yard or the garden. He also enjoyed listening to music, especially country, soft rock, and gospel music. James had a true servant’s heart, always helping others in need. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Louise (Byers) Stephens; and siblings, Larry Stephens, Terry Stephens, and Elizabeth Gilliam. James is survived by his loving children, Candice (Orlando) Oviedo and Christopher (Charlene) Stephens; grandchildren, Ethan Oviedo Stephens, Aniken Oviedo Stephens, Juana Martinez, Octavio Martinez, Destiny Stephens, and Joshua Stephens; several great-grandchildren; siblings, Suzanne McClure, Darlene (Ricky) Frame, Tina Stephens, Danny Stephens, and Faye Sims; and many nieces and nephews.
