James Daniel ‘J.D.’ Jones – Obituary

Dr. James Daniel ‘J.D.’ Jones, age 89, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 28th, 2018.  J.D. was born in 1929 in Huntsville, Alabama to James Daniel Jones Sr. and wife, Martha Etta Dudney.  J.D. grew up in Huntsville during the Great Depression era, and graduated from West Huntsville High school where he was Valedictorian, Quarterback of the football team and a representative to Boys State.

J.D. graduated from the University of Alabama in three years to pursue Dental school at Northwestern University in Chicago. He married Martha Jane Carter August 1, 1953 and then left immediately after the wedding to do a two year stay in the Airforce during the Korean War.  He and Martha lived in Texas and Japan while he served in the Air Force.  After two years serving his country he returned to Huntsville, Alabama where he practiced general dentistry until 1995 when he retired.  J.D. was an avid fisherman in his spare time. He loved Alabama football, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. After Martha passed, J.D. spent the last five years of his life in Atlanta, Georgia, but never forgot his Alabama roots.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Martha, and son, James Daniel (Danny) Jones III, and father James Daniel Jones Sr. He is survived by a son, Donald Carter Jones and wife, Kelly of Carrollton, GA; daughter, Lisa Jones Dickson and husband, Doug of Atlanta, GA; grandsons, Brooks and Flynn Dickson of Atlanta, GA; granddaughters, Anna and Piper Jones of Carrollton, GA; mother, Martha Etta Dudney, (106); and sisters, Faye Heaton, Sonya Miller and Barbara Hammer.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday, May 7th at Laughlin Service Funeral Home in Huntsville, Alabama. The funeral service will immediately follow with Donald Carter Jones officiating. Burial will be in Huntsville Memory Gardens.
