James Calvin “Jim” Shelly Jr., age 78, of Madison, Alabama, formerly of Florence, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014. The memorial service will be Saturday, Jan. 10, 2014, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Florence with the Rev. Kevin Johnson officiating.
Jim was a native of Georgia and a member of First Baptist Church of Florence. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He was a retired Baptist minister. He also served in campus ministries, foreign missions to Brazil, and family/financial counseling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Calvin Sr. and Edith Shelly, his sister, Patsy, stepbrother, Bobby Cantrell, his wife, Mary Ann Shelly, his daughter, Elizabeth Lynn Shelly Harvey.
He is survived by his son, U.S. Army Lt. Col. (retired) David Malcolm Shelly and wife, Julie; brothers, Jerry L. Shelly and wife, Helen, and Larry J. Shelly; sister, Shelly Krendel; grandchildren, Matthew and McKenna Shelly; and several nieces and nephews.
The family expresses special thanks to the church family at First Baptist Church of Florence.
