DR. JACQUES SURRENCY SR., age 56, of Perry, GA, a former resident of Thomson, GA, passed on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at his residence leaving behind a profound legacy of education, mentorship, and love. Dr. Surrency was the son of the late Luther & Lorraine Surrency, and a 1988 graduate of Thomson High School.
A proud and dedicated alumnus of Fort Valley State University (Class of ’93), Jacques went on to earn his Doctor of Philosophy in Plant and Soil Science from Alabama A&M University in 2002. In August 2003, he returned to his beloved alma mater as a faculty member. For 23 years, Dr. Surrency served as a brilliant professor and the Plant Science program coordinator for the College of Agriculture, Family Sciences and Technology. His deep commitment to the university was beautifully reflected in his long-standing role as the college’s Academic Marshal during Commencement ceremonies.
Dr. Surrency’s impact extended far beyond the classroom. Whether leading biotechnology research initiatives, chaperoning students on life-changing study abroad trips, or serving as a leader within the FVSU Warner Robins Alumni Area Chapter (WRAAC), he poured his heart into elevating others. Known for his phenomenal sense of humor, infectious laugh, and warm, inviting smile, he had a rare gift for making his students and colleagues laugh while inspiring them to achieve greatness.
A WAKE / MEET & GREET will be held for Dr. Surrency on Sunday, September 27th, from 3-6:00 p.m. at Springfield Baptist Church in Thomson. On Tuesday, September 29th, there will be a VISITATION for Dr. Surrency from 12 noon until 1:00 p.m. at the Pettigrew Center at Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley. Following the public viewing, a HOMEGOING-CELEBRATION-OF-LIFE-SERVICE will begin at 1:00 p.m.; also, to be held in the Pettigrew Center for Dr. Surrency. On Wednesday, September 30th, with a REPAST to follow. The FINAL RESTING PLACE for Dr. Surrency will be in Westview Cemetery in Thomson. The INTERMENT will begin at 1:00 p.m. The public is welcome to attend, Thomson Funeral System directing.
On the day of the service, the funeral procession will leave Mrs. Sureka Latimore’s residence, 1444 Willow Lake Road, Fort Valley, GA, at 12:30 p.m.

He leaves behind a rich legacy of love and is survived by his devoted son, Jacques “Joc” Surrency, Jr.; a devoted daughter, Jada Surrency; three loving sisters, Donna Surrency, Nycole Surrency and Cassandra Hill; other loving family members; his extensive Wildcat community; and generations of students whose lives were forever changed by his guidance.
