Funeral services for J.O. Mitchell ,96, of Decatur, will be Monday, December 8, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Somerville Road Church of Christ with Ministers Gary Patton and Tim Sutton directing. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. prior to the service with a 1:30 p.m. graveside service at Dement Cemetary near Elk River.

Mr. Mitchell was a World War II veteran, serving in France and England. He was a former Principal at Gordon-Bibb Elementary School, an avid sportsman and long-time member of the Point Mallard Golf Association. He was a member of the Somerville Road Church of Christ for 52 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Mitchell, and is survived by a brother, William Mitchell, of Athens; son Jim Mitchell; and daughter-in-law, Katie Mitchell, of Decatur; two grandchildren, Brad Mitchell, of Birmingham and Laynee Kontos, of Destin, Florida; and two great-grandchildren, Caroline Mitchell and Mary Brennan McWilliams.

Waymon Terry will serve as honorary pallbearer.

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the members and staff of Riverside Assisted Living and Decatur’s Hospice of the Valley for their support.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to Hospice of the Valley, 240 Johnston St. Decatur, Al. 35602.
