Inez Shelton Mathias Reed (Nannie) passed away on Feb. 28, at the age of 89.

She was preceded in death by her parents Clarence Shelton and Ethel Pulliam, brother Pete Shelton, husbands Robbie Mathias and Charlie Reed.

She is survived by sister Joyce Sharp; children Tommy (Brenda), Dean (Renee), Keith (Val); grandkids Vikki, Ryan, Abbie, Robbie, Matt and Mindi; great grandchildren Gracie, Charlie Dean, David, Jackson,Reed and Lola; godchild Vanessa. Aunt Inez owned and operated the Fifth Avenue Fruitstand of the old Madison Heights neighborhood where she brought many together as one. She cooked every week for our whole family for over sixty years and would feed anyone who walked through her door. She was well known for her delicious cornbread, wish we had a dollar for every pan of that she’d flipped.

Although she had no children of her own she helped raise many and was the matriarch of our family- she was the thread that held our whole tribe together. While writing this piece, Aunt Inez transitioned from this earth, as we gathered around her peaceful body someone played- Go Rest High on That Mountain. The words “we can see the smiles on the Angels faces as they hear your sweet voice sing, your work here on Earth is done”- she loved to dance.

Aunt Inez had such an impact on so many lives- through her love and unselfish service to others.

Many thanks to all the Huntsville Hospital nurses, doctors and all that helped us with her care.

Cousin Hazel took her on outings or dinner and shopping. All her cousins were an importan part of her life.

There will be a private family service for Mrs. Reed.

In lieu of flowers, send donations to St. Jude Hospital.
