Ina May Myers, age 94, of Sewanee passed away on December 22, 2021 after a short illness. She was the daughter of William Cecil Myers and Elsie Campbell Myers. She attended college at Louisiana Tech University and at the University of Tennessee, as well as summer school at Sewanee before it officially went coed many years later. After college, Ina kept the books at the Sewanee Steam Laundry, where her father was the manager. After taking a course on dry cleaning in Silver Springs, Maryland, she came back to Sewanee and established her own dry-cleaning shop, Myers Cleaners. After retiring from this business, she went on to manage the University Supply Store until she retired in 1988. Ina was one of the first board members for the Sewanee Utility District and was the first woman to be elected to the Franklin County Commission. She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the Civil Service Board of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department. Ina believed strongly in the election process and worked the polls for many years. She also worked on the Sewanee Fourth of July committee for years and was always visible making the rounds of the festivities in a golf cart. Though she did not get out much in her last few years, she was always working on various projects at home. When people came to her with questions about the past in Sewanee, she would always dig through her personal archives and find the answers. She was also very adept at researching legal matters for a number of people. She was always willing to lend a hand, even repairing and constructing buildings. She will be fondly remembered by many. Ina was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ernest Cecil Myers and sister, Elise Ann Myers Medford. She is survived by her two nieces, Marcia Medford of Sewanee and Linda Medford Evans of St. Augustine, Florida. A memorial gathering will take place in the spring.
