Hugh Michael “Mike” Metcalf, age 71, of Winchester, passed away Sunday, December 28, 2025, at the Waters of Winchester with his sister Pam by his side. Mike was born February 22, 1954, in Winchester, to the late Hugh Dedric Metcalf and Holly (Judge) Metcalf. He worked in construction as a roofer.
Mike was the kind of man who never met a stranger. He had a warm way about him that made people feel welcome, and he cared deeply for his family and friends. He held the people he loved close, always remembering birthdays and reaching out in thoughtful ways that made others feel seen. Mike also had a special gift for keeping memories alive. He loved to honor those who had passed on, and he made sure their stories were not forgotten.
A true historian at heart, Mike was a family historian and a storyteller in his own right. He could bring the past to life with a few words, sharing cherished memories that made people laugh, think, and sometimes tear up in the best way. His stories and the love behind them will stay with everyone who knew him.
In his free time, Mike enjoyed classic TV shows and movies, reading, listening to music, and cheering on his favorite teams, the Chicago Cubs, Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks. Above all else, he loved his people, and he leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will be treasured.
Mike will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered as a devoted brother, a proud uncle, a caring cousin and a faithful friend.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mavis Corene Morris Metcalf.
Mike is survived by his sisters, Pam Vanhorn (John Lambert) and Nena Itula (Pete Weissenborn); brother, Dale (Terri) Metcalf; nieces and nephews:
Dale Metcalf Jr, Nick Metcalf, Caitlyn Metcalf, Jeremiah Itula, Josh Itula and Jonathan Itula; great-nieces and great-nephews, Dillon, Marisa, Kalleigh, Grayson, Marley, Casey, Maya, Deja, Nila, Peyton, Paisely, Miesha, Mikaiyan, Julius, and Auggie.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026, from 11:00am – 2:00pm at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home with funeral service following in the chapel of Moore-Cortner Funeral Home at 2:00pm.
