hughHugh E. “Hap” Halbrooks was born May 14, 1927 to Reuben Chester Halbrooks and Ludie Prince Halbrooks in Decatur. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 59 years, Annice; brothers, Cecil and Ralph; sister, Laverne Halbrooks Jackson. He is survived by one brother, Coy of Fort Worth, Texas and sister, Bettye Halbrooks Trankina of Alpharetta, Georgia; sister-in-law, Marthalyn W. Biles and husband, Billy; brother-in-law, Larry Whitman and wife, Edna; sister-in-law, Verna Halbrooks of Marietta, South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Riverside High School in Decatur in 1945 where he played football and basketball for Coach H. L. Ogle. He served in the U.S. Navy where he was a Seaman First Class in World War II. Graduated from the University of Alabama in 1950 with a B.S. in Education. He worked in management for E.I. Dupont Co. at the Savannah River plant in Aiken, South Carolina for 34 years. He retired in May 1982. Returned to Decatur in January 2008. Started attending Shorty’s Boys meetings the same year. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Decatur where he attended the Carl Kuby and Bob Christian Sunday school class. He loved being a Christian. He loved golf. He was a charter member and stockholder of North Augusta Country Club in North Augusta, South Carolina.
Graveside service will be Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016 at 1 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery with Reverends Roger Jenkins and Bobby Ray Halbrooks officiating. Pallbearers will be family. Honorary pallbearers will be Shorty’s Boys. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to First Baptist Church or your favorite Charity. Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family.
