Howard Wayne BlackwellHoward Wayne Blackwell, 89, of Ardmore, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones.

Wayne, affectionately known to many as Jazz, was born on April 8, 1935, in Madison County, AL, to Howard and Bensie Blackwell. He graduated from Ardmore High School in 1953, then moved to Michigan with $50 and a bus ticket in pursuit of a job. In 1957, Wayne was drafted to serve in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Karlsruhe, Germany working as a military mechanic. Following his military service, Wayne continued his career as a plumber and pipefitter. He worked at M&D Mechanical for over 30 years, serving as Vice President and Director of Field Operations for his last seven years before retiring in 1999. Wayne married Betsy Whaley on June 18, 1960, and the two spent 64 wonderful years together. After his retirement, Wayne enjoyed traveling with Betsy, restoring vintage autos, and sharing stories over coffee with his friends at McDonald’s. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, friend, and follower of Jesus. Wayne was a member of First Baptist Church Ardmore.

Wayne was known for his kind heart and generous spirit. He had a talent for making everyone feel welcome and valued, and his presence brought joy and comfort to those around him.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Betsy; son, Eddie Blackwell; daughter, Joanna Anderson (Jeff); grandsons, Trevor Anderson (Rylee) and Patrick Anderson (Kaci); great-granddaughter, Morgan Anderson; sisters, Judy Troupe (Johnny) and Jane Jenkins; and many nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and nephews.

Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Bensie Blackwell; brothers, Marcus Blackwell and Jerry Blackwell; and sisters, Betty Inman, June Wright, Edith Clem, and Sue Bland.

A funeral service will be held for Mr. Wayne Blackwell on Sunday, December 15, at 2:00 PM at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home, officiated by Pastor Alan Hughes. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to 1:45 PM at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Eddie Blackwell, Jeff Anderson, Trevor Anderson, Patrick Anderson, Keith Blackwell, and Jack Inman.
