Hillman D. Gargis – Obituary

hillmanHillman D. Gargis, age 81, passed away May 31, 2015 at home. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 03, 2015 from 12:00 PM-2:00 PM at Colbert Memorial Chapel, with service to follow at 2:00 PM in the chapel. Burial will be in the Colbert Memorial Gardens. Brother Greg Beasley and Wayne Jeffrey’s will be officiating.

He was the son of Homer and Myrtle Briley Gargis. He was the ninth of ten children, seven boys, and three girls. Our loss and heavens gain. He was a veteran of Army. He served county with honor. He was a member of Washington Lodge of number 36 Mason and Scottish Rinks 33 0/0 and VFW. He was raised in Spring Valley, still lives there at the home place. Built his home age of 31 and Gladys was 27. He had a talent of many things working in his Garden taking care of his pecan trees and made a large harvest. He was a member of the Iron Workers Local 477. He retired from TVA, and was a member of Valley Grove Baptist Church.

Preceded in death by parents, Homer and Myrtle Gargis; son, Marty Shane Gargis, brothers, Homer Jr., WK (Bill), J.T. (Jake),, W.C. (Dump), Alfred Mead; sisters, Juanita Isbell and Marcille Looney.

Survivors are wife, Gladys Posey Gargis of 55 years that was the love of his life; son, Hillman Gregory Gargis; brother, Ray Gargis (Florida); sister, Kathleese (Kay) Bryant (Rogersville, AL); grandchildren, Patrick Gregory Gargis, and Brenley Elizabeth Gargis; and a host of nieces and nephews. He cherished them with all his heart.

Pallbearers will be Ray Counts, Franklin Williams, Larry Allen, Charles Cooner, Jonny Nixon, JT Hallmark, and Sammy Dennis. Honorary pallbearers are Tommy McBride, Jerry Gargis, Jerry McGee, Charlie Hallmark, and his Sunday School Class.

Thanks to the Home Health Care from Helen Keller, Gentiva Hospice, bath girl Britney, and nurses Tanzy, Kim, and others for the very kind and loving care that you showed us. No flowers please. Memorials can be made to Valley Grove Church Building Fund.

Colbert Memorial Chapel is assisting the family.
