Hershel Raymond Pounders – Obituary

HershalHershel Raymond Pounders, 88, of Tuscumbia passed away at his home Tuesday, April 30, 2013, after an extended illness. Visitation will be Thursday 6-8 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, Cherokee. The funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Frank Whitaker officiating.

Mr. Pounders was a World War II veteran serving in the Army’s 36th Infantry Division at Salerno, Rome, and Anzio, Italy. For his military service, he earned numerous honors including the Meritorious Unit Commendation with One Gold Star, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with Two Bronze Stars, and Combat Infantry badge. Mr. Pounders retired from TVA and the Laborers Local 366. He was a member of Barton First Baptist Church where he faithfully served in various capacities over the years.

Mr. Pounders was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He had a zest for life and was always ready for an adventure. Mr. Pounders loved the outdoors whether at work or play. He was an accomplished squirrel hunter and crappie fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents Monroe and Mabel Pounders; brothers Charlie, Melvin, Percy, Horace, and Howard Ray; and sisters Ercie Thigpen, Flora Copeland, and Zula Osborne. He was also preceded in death by his grandson-in-law, Keith Borden.

Mr. Pounders is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Lorene “Polly” Pounders along with his two children Janet (Jim) Logan and Larry (Karen) Pounders; grandchildren Kary Borden, Brent (Missy) Logan, Melanie ( Terry) Cosby, and Lauren (Drew) Carpenter; great-grandchildren Kayla and Jared Borden, Logan, Chloe, and Clay Cosby, Hallie Logan and Madison Carpenter.

Other survivors include his sister Elsie Greene along with a host of nieces and nephews.

Pall bearers will be Jack Crowell, Yancy Pounders, Terry Cosby, Rodney Timmons, Larry Jarnigan, and Leland Timmons.

The family wishes to thanks his hospice provider, Amedisys, for the wonderful compassions and encouragement they provided over the past few months.
