Herschel was raised on a farm on Camp Branch, a former civil war encampment, in Lauderdale County. He was one of 13 children. He lived all his life in Greenhill. He was a retired electrician with TVA local union #558. He also raised cattle and was a member of Cattlemen Association. He loved to travel, an outdoorsman, hunting, fishing, and camping with his brothers on the rivers and lakes of the south and out west. He loved snow skiing with his children and grandchildren in the Rockies and Appalachian mountains. He was a sportsman, coach, and loved watching his children and grandchildren play their various sports. Herschel was an Army WWII Veteran, serving in the Italy and African theatre. A Purple Heart recipient, he attended the Honor Flight WWII Memorial with his 3 other WWII brothers, Howard, Horace, and Hollie. Herschel was a member of Atlas Church of Christ where he served as an elder for 43 years. He loved his church family and looked forward to being reunited with his mom, dad, and family in heaven. The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Atlas Church of Christ with Brother Miles Stutts & Steve Shelton officiating. Burial to follow in Richardson Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Atlas Church of Christ. Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary Pallbearers will be past and present elders of Atlas Church of Christ. Survivors include: Wife of 69 years- Bessie Springer Hamner; Daughter- Mary Ellen Thornton (Mickey) of Scottsboro; 2 Sons- Dwight Hamner (Susan) and Lynn Hamner (Diane) both of Killen; Grandchildren- Nicole Cook (Shannon) of Scottsboro; Rachel Nash (Neal) of Huntsville; Daks Hamner(Heather) of Atlanta; Lindsay Hamner; and Lisa Wylie (Brian) of Madison; 5 Great Grandchildren; Sisters- Agnes Clemmons, Irma Estes, and Martha Burrows (Tom); Horace Hamner, Hollie Hamner, Tory Hamner (Ruby); George Hamner (Carolyn); John Hamner (Hilda); Special Nephew- Glen Lee Butler and many more nieces and nephews; Preceded in death by: Parents- Robert and Mary Hamner; Sisters- Elvie Peck and Edith Nichols; Brothers- Howard Hamner and Hunter Hamner; and infant son Don. The family would like to thank Atlas Church, his caretakers, and the whole community for the attention and acts of love shown during Herschel’s extended illness.
