Herley Lee Naylor, age 86, of Athens, Alabama, passed away peacefully on July 3rd, 2026.
Born on December 30, 1939, in Moulton, Alabama, Herley lived a life defined by hard work. Family was the center of his life, and he took great pride in watching it grow through the generations. He was known for his wisdom, sense of humor, and willingness to help others. One of the things his family cherished most was listening to him share stories from a lifetime of escapades that kept everyone laughing for hours and retelling for days.
Herley treasured time spent outdoors with family and friends. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He spent many years as a foreman at Wayne Farms, where he earned the respect of coworkers through his leadership and strong work ethic. He was a member of Round Island Baptist Church. He was also honored as a member of the Lawrence County Sports Hall of Fame.
He was preceded in death by his parents William Naylor and Buvena Rainey Naylor, his wife of 52 years, Ruby G. Naylor; his wife, Joyce Dodson Naylor; his son, Donald Smith; and siblings, Joyce Faye Hembree and Billy Ray Naylor.
He is survived by his children: Joyce “Jody” Sibley (Lanier), Jerry Naylor (Gwen), Allen Naylor, Darlene Gatlin (Danny); Deborah Dobbs (Paul), Ronald Smith (Ruby), Larry Smith (Carol); Anner Mae Smith (daughter in law); and several siblings.
He is also survived by his grandchildren: Courtney Naylor Driver, Jessica Naylor, Brooke Gatlin Moran, Laura Gatlin DuBois, Chris Smith, Paul Dobbs Jr, Jeremy Dobbs, Amy Dobbs Romick, Thersa Smith, Donnie Smith, Crystal Smith, and Larry Eugene Smith; 18 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, family of Joyce Dodson Naylor; extended family members, and friends.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 7th, 2026, from 12:00 – 1:45 p.m., at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Round Island Baptist Church.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who offered care, support, and friendship throughout his life especially Hospice of Limestone County.
Herley will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, church family, and all whose lives he touched.
