Helen Louise Prince Irwin, age 85 of Sewanee, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2023, at The Villages in Murfreesboro. Louise was born on January 28, 1938, in Sewanee to the late J.D. Prince and Irene Hawkins Prince. Before retiring from The University of the South as insurance coordinator she worked as bookkeeper/receptionist for many years for Dr. Dudley Fort.
Louise was very active in her church, community affairs and county politics, including being a county commissioner. She was instrumental in establishing and organizing Sewanee’s Fourth of July celebration. For many years she was “Santa” to children in Franklin and Grundy counties. She loved traveling and, in fact, had visited all 50 states.
Louise will be remembered for her willingness to help those in need. She had a heart of gold and had a way of bringing out the best in everyone she met.
In addition to her parents Louise is preceded in death by her husband, William Richard “Dick” Irwin, sisters Juanita Mankin, Mary Frances Gallagher, and Doris Ann Edwards, and brothers Larry Prince and Harry Prince. She is survived by her sons Jeff (Sandy) Irwin and Patrick (Kathy) Irwin, her daughter Vicki (Mark) Sargent and sister Janis Prince Stovall; granddaughter Natalie Irwin; grandsons Logan Sargent, Nicholas Sargent and William Irwin. She was beloved by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, in the Chapel of Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at St. Mark & St. Paul Episcopal Church in Sewanee with interment at Eastern Star Cemetery.
