Helen Elliott Sockwell
June 2, 1926 – January 22, 2017

Helen was born in Lincolnton, NC. She was the eldest of three daughters of George S. and Helen H. Elliott. In 1935 her father took a position as Secretary/Treasurer with Dallas Textile Mills and moved the family to Huntsville. In 1948, Helen was graduated from Sweet Briar College and married Warren Sockwell, whom she met at a high school dance. They were married for 63 years.

Helen was a homemaker, a volunteer for local charitable organizations and a member of local social clubs, including the Junior League of Huntsville, Study Circle, The Rounders and The Grace Club. She also obtained a teacher’s certificate and worked as a substitute teacher. She played the piano, loved music and frequently attended performances by the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra and Huntsville Opera Theater. She was an equestrian and skilled tennis player. Vivacious and full of laughter, she was beloved by friends and family.

Helen is survived by Steve, Diane and Tegan Sockwell of Arlington, VA; Helen H. Sockwell of Huntsville, AL; Donnie and Virginia Howard of Gallant, AL; and Evan, Rachael, Maddox and Savannah Howard of Marietta, GA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sweet Briar College, Office of Alumnae Relations & Development, P.O. Box 1057, Sweet Briar, VA 24595 or the Huntsville Botanical Garden, 4747 Bob Wallace Avenue, Huntsville, AL 35805.

The family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful efforts of the caregivers of Senior Helpers of Huntsville, Home Instead of Gadsden, Gadsden Health & Rehab Center and Alacare Home Health & Hospice of Gadsden.

Visitation will be held at the Laughlin Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m.
