Helen Anne Hayes Ammons – Obituary

Helen Anne Hayes Ammons, 85, resident of Double Branch Road, died Monday, December 25, 2017, at NHC Maury Regional Transitional Care Center.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Knob Creek Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Friday from 10:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Born March 26, 1932 in the Boston Community of Maury County, she was the daughter of the late Hugh Bradshaw Hayesand the late Lillian Inez Brown Hayes. On August 23, 1952 she married Edd Noel Ammons who preceded her in death July 22, 2010. Following her 1950 graduation from Columbia Central High School, she attended Columbia Business College and worked at Central Services until 1954. During the 1970’s and 1980’s, she was best known as a teacher at First Baptist Pre-school and Sunday School where she was affectionately called “Ammons”. Her love and ability for working with children was an obvious talent. Mrs. Ammons was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was a charter member of West End Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Jennifer Anne (Tony) Grimes of Franklin and Linda Carol (Mike) Shouse of Columbia; granddaughters, Dr. Ansley Lynn Grimes (Dr. John) Stanfill of Eads, TN and Addison Elizabeth Shouse of Columbia; nieces, Janice Reed Klein of The Villages, FL; Marnie (Ted) Johnson of Columbia; nephews, William Bradshaw Hayes of Gallatin and Michael Johnson of Springfield, TN; and brother-in-law, Bill (Molly) Ammons of Columbia.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Lynn Ammons in 1968; brother, Hugh Bradshaw Hayes, Jr.; and sisters, Eleanor Hayes Reed and Mary Elizabeth Hayes Johnson.

Active pallbearers will be Dr. John Stanfill, Brad Hayes, Jack Hayes, Mike Johnson, Jeff Klein, and Tommy Hayes. Honorary pallbearers will include members of Columbia Central High School Class of 1950, charter members of West End Baptist Church, and members of American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
